Orton can do the job
Random thoughts while wondering whether the weather on the North Side of Chicago in late October really would be suitable for a World Series:
Mike North is starting what he hopes will become a national holiday: '''fess Up Day'' on Oct. 24. At which time people can say they were wrong about Bears quarterback Kyle Orton or any other misjudgment they might have made. Yours truly appeared on North's webio show Monday at wildfirerestaurant.com to discover being named a co-chair of the event. As soon as Quick Hits can verify the Bears quarterback is not some guy in an Orton Halloween costume, the 'fessing-up preparations will begin.
Speaking of North, he and former/future broadcast partner Dan Jiggetts will make their first appearance together since announcing their Comcast SportsNet show, which begins in 2009. They will be attending Friday's ''Evening With the Stars'' at White Eagle Banquets & Restaurant in Niles to benefit the Gale Sayers Center. Information on the event is available at www.GaleSayersCenter.org.
Speaking of Sayers, the Bears Hall of Fame running back will be the guest Wednesday at ESPN Radio 1000's ''Lunch With a Legend'' program at Morton's, 65 E. Wacker Place. Reservations may be made by calling (312) 201-0464.
The World Series promises to set record television numbers in terms of viewers. OK, more specifically, viewers watching something other than the World Series. And for those outside of Chicago and Houston who thought the 2005 Fall Classic between the White Sox and Astros drew low ratings, you ain't seen nothin' yet. With plenty more nothin' yet to come.
If the Rams can beat the Dallas Cowboys, they might be capable of giving the Bears a game when they meet Nov. 23 in St. Louis. Whether that game is football is another matter.
So the Cubs gave Jim Hendry a contract extension through 2012. Meaning chances are good he will be around for the team's first World Series title since 1908. Or at least the sale of the ballclub.
RANDOM THOUGHTS:
CENTER OF ATTENTION: Ming gets look at different post
Yao Ming on a football field.
What? As a goalpost maybe?
The Houston Rockets center was honored Sunday with the city's other Olympians in a halftime ceremony at the Texans game against the Lions.
''I have no understanding of football,'' Yao said. ''I watch the highlights. They are very physical, very interesting in highlights. But in highlights, every sport looks very interesting.''
Why did he participate in the on-field event?
''To see a football game.''
Well, if that's what you can call a game against the Lions.
DAVIS ON DAVIS: Only MJ can top a role like this
A Heisman Trophy-winning running back from Amherst College?
Only in the movies.
Amherst alum Rob Davis (below) portrays Syracuse running back Ernie Davis in ''The Express.''
It doesn't get much better for the 24-year-old.
''Short of, I guess, a Michael Jordan script came out and I got to play Michael Jordan,'' Brown told Chris Yandek of CYInterview.com. ''That would be incomparable. The first black Heisman winner, national championship, what more could I ask for? Of course this is a dream role, and I love football. Now here I am engrossed in all this football, and I get to go to games and stuff. I am just ecstatic.
''In a lot of ways, he laid the groundwork for people like me to play college football freely and have the opportunity to win a Heisman Trophy. I am not saying I had the opportunity. I just went and played D3 ball, but for guys like [Ohio State's] Troy Smith and Eddie George and people like them. It's just groundbreaking material that we're dealing with here that Ernie Davis was the first one to do it.''
NICE CATCH: Credit QB Brady with a reception
So what does an NFL quarterback do when he has a season-ending injury?
In the case of Tom Brady, the answer apparently is make marriage plans.
The New York Post reported he and Gisele Bundchen ''are ready to take the plunge. Sources tell Page Six the Patriots quarterback and the Brazilian supermodel are planning a wedding reception at Tavern on the Green.''
''They were recently there, and Brady had a long chat with Broadway Joe Namath,'' a source said.
Brady is having less success selling his $16 million apartment in New York. Bundchen is trying to unload a penthouse in New York's West Village.
He has cut his asking price by $540,000, but real-estate experts told the Boston Herald the apartment ''may still be overpriced.''
