: : : I first heard about this on WGN - a Randy Salerno golf outing for the foundation created in his name.
: : : Anyway tonight in a promo, Ann State on CBS 2 said "a very special dedication to our late colleague Randy Salerno" and "he would have loved it".
: : : There's something REALLY tacky and cheap about having Ann State say stuff like that when she didn't know Randy Salerno at ALL. She arrived in Chicago MONTHS after his death.
: :
: : What does this Randy Salerno Foundation benefit anyway?
:
: Found it. From rememberingrandy.com (which has a VERY large CBS 2 presence on this independent web site):
: "The Randy Salerno Foundation dedicates these events to helping students of any age, race or ethnic background pursue a career in broadcast journalism. One of the key missions of this foundation is to promote the importance of broadcast journalists responsibility to serve their communities. The Randy Salerno Foundation is committed to helping raise funds in a variety of ways, and providing aid to those seeking educational assistance and/or pursuing projects which better our community. All financial assistance will be distributed locally to benefit deserving causes within the Chicagoland area.
: Two of the many recipients for 2008 include CL South High School and Illinois State University."
:
: Interesting.
I'm sorry, and no disrespect to Randy and his family and friends, but everything about this Randy Salerno death has seemed wrong to me. The prosecution of the drunk friend, the publicity-strewn funeral, the constant use of his likeness on CBS2's part (WGN handled it well), this "foundation" and now this golf outing. It's just doesn't feel right.
